Harvest Tea

Come and enjoy a harvest tea with all the classic accompaniments, served by costumed interpreters in the historic parlours and dining room at Gibson House Museum. Finger sandwiches, scones and cookies and cakes are inspired by historic menus and recipes. Tables are set with fine china and flowers. After enjoying tea, participants can explore the historic house on a self-guided tour. This event is part of Toronto History Museums' Fall and Harvest Traditions programming.

Victorian Séance

Learn about the Victorian obsession with death, and the rituals that surrounded the mourning and burial of the dead! Join leading paranormal investigator and historian, award-winning columnist, and television and radio show host Stephanie 'Spooky Steph' Dumbreck for Victorian séance, where history and mystery combine. Steph will use her expertise to see if she can contact any spirits, encouraging audience participation and inviting them up to try some of her gadgets. After the séance, take home your own Funeral Cake packaged in 19th-century fashion. This event is part of Toronto History Museums' Halloween programming.

Teddy Bear Tea

Enjoy a lovely traditional Victorian afternoon tea with drinks, a variety of sandwiches, and treats served by costumed staff at Gibson House. Kids will enjoy a cup of bubble-gum tea and sample traditional tea fare like finger sandwiches and dainties. Bring your favourite stuffy and enjoy the atmospheric home, filled with teddy bears who have assembled to greet guests throughout the museum! Gingerbread Sweets and Treats Workshop

Get into the holiday spirit by decorating a gingerbread cookie and baking a traditional recipe in the historic kitchen. Gather in the parlour with a shortbread cookie and warm apple cider for a reading of the classic tale, "A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Try out the many toys Victorian children would have received Christmas morning, and explore the historic house bedecked in greenery and cheerful ribbons. After programmed activities, self-tour the historic house, visit the Discovery Gallery and pick up your decorated Gibson House cookies. Gingerbread House Workshop

Build and decorate a unique gingerbread house inspired by the Gibson’s red brick Georgian house or design your own! Plus explore the beautifully decorated historic house and enjoy Victorian holiday treats. This event is part of Toronto History Museums' Holiday programming. $50 tickets for a table, up to four participants (of all ages) can work together to build a gingerbread house at a booked table . At least one participant must be an adult.

To The New Year: A Hogmanay Dinner

Celebrate the Scottish New Year celebration Hogmanay with a program of entertainment and a candlelit dinner served in the historic dining room and kitchen. While enjoying a menu inspired by 19th-century Scottish cookbooks, experience the tradition of the ‘First Footer’ along with a lively program of Hogmanay stories, poetry readings and early Ontario music played on period instruments, led by Ian Bell. Dinner is inspired by Scottish communities in the early 20th century, and ingredients are based on food grown on the Gibson farm and available in Toronto in the mid-19th century. Hogmanay and Hygge: A candlelit evening experience

Trends and traditions come together blending Scottish Hogmanay traditions, Danish Hygge cosiness, and global holiday connections. Explore our cozy candle-lit Victorian home and discover the history behind many winter holidays, experience a traditional Hogmanay ‘first footing’, savour some seasonal treats, and make a julehjerter, a traditional Danish Christmas decoration. Enjoy mulled Ontario apple cider and a selection of traditional seasonal treats including shortbread, gingerbread and candied orange peel.
